Rough Pubs
|
I've seen a few funny and eye opening posts on a some other fans forums about rough pubs people have been to but not seen one on here so thought start one. For me I've been in a few over the years! Thomas a Becket Old Kent Road early 90s (bloke was training a pit bull to bite a plank of wood at the bar),
Silver Buckle Camberwell in early 2000s for a late night drink. Knife checked on way in but great fun if stayed out of trouble. Loads of characters. Mainly black blokes chasing large white ladies.
Hand and Flower Parnell Road 2008. Was pretty much on its last legs and seem to be run by some West ham mob. Massive ICF sign in the bogs.
Hamilton Arms (now a shop) Herne Hill for a lock in early 2000s. Snakebite man!
Always wanted a gander at the royal Charlie in Poplar but knocked down. Anyone been in?
Bird in Hand Forest Hill. Watched an England game in there once in my own surrounded by a coked up mob of Millwall who were convinced I was old bill. Horrible experience
Black Boy St Mary Cray always looked interesting but never been in (now shut).
Margate seafront has a couple but not been down there for a while. Most seaside towns probably the same.
Went uni in Manchester a Early 90s and some proper dives up there that make these seem tame.
This a good thread if anyone likes similar stories on a man city forum.

Dunno about rough but the single worst pub I've ever been into in my life was the Penny Farthing opposite Liverpool Lime St (now closed)
Been in there twice and walked straight back out within 30 seconds both times, the second occasion a bird was throwing up on the carpet, and it had only just gone midday.
Speaking to locals it was basically known for being propped up by the homeless population and shoplifters, who true to form were/are plentiful.

Walked past that place many times and thought "I'd never fucking go in there"
Same thing with The Blob Shop opposite spoons.

There used to be a no name pub in Canning Town that had a skull and cross bones flag above the door.

Been in the Blob Shop once Gav. Average age must be 80. About £1.60 a pint. Walk past there any day of the week morning noon or night and it's packed, usually with mobility scooters parked outside.

The Blob Shop is pretty much the only business on that strip that doesn't have bouncers. Saying something when even KFC and McDonalds do.
Most unwelcome I've ever felt in a pub has been when going off the beaten track in Bristol. Fantastic city but when its rough its fucking rough.

I went into a pub in Leeds in 1987. Don't know the name.
About a dozen punters.
I think I was the only person in there without a facial tattoo of some sort.
Two of these blokes were in suits clearly celebrating a not guilty verdict.
Two CCTV cameras to cover the place, the first time I had ever seen them in a pub. This was over 30 years ago.
Ordered a pint. Drank it in about a minute and fucked off sharpish.

There used to be a pub in the 051 building adjacent to the Adelpi called Dickie Lewis's. It was the same vibe - piss cheap old man's boozer. On lunch break between lectures we'd go down for a full English with toast and a cup of tea for £2. £1 a couple of pints to go with it.

The New Gog in Custom House was a rough joint, there was no handle on the kazi door to get out, you had to knock on it and the guy selling drugs would let you out,I was in there once and a guy came in with a sack barrow and nicked the fruit machine,no one stopped him as a few of them were splitting the takings, they were chatting to the barmaid to distract her, crazy place.

The Woodcutter Arms in Leigh.... sponsored us and still do... always said it was worth a goal start having that pub on our shirt... a place that basically the locals run... the locals are basically 3 or 4 settled sown pikey families... once the brewery tried to get a trouble shooter in to sort the place out... he had sorted out some of the roughest pubs in South and East London... he tried to put a stop to all the after hours and all the other going ons ... he lasted a week... he left with over 80 stitches in his face.... the Police used to turn up every weekend around 25+ handed.... I remember they used to have a lovely polaroid of one of the barmaids wanking off a donkey that had been brought in for a gentlemans evening that was run by the locals... has calmed down a bit but still has his moments...

I was in Chesterfield with work in the early 2000s and they had a topless bar. I'd never been to one before and was looking forward to the experience.
Jesus H Christ, it was rank. Packed with northern monkeys, it had lino floors, tatty furniture and it smelt of piss.
The barmaids were thick as shit and only qualified for the job as they both resembled women. One of them must have been late forties and by the look of her topless I reckon at least five kids must have swung off her tits at some time or another. If they were any lower she could have mopped the bar floor as she went.
The other one had a cracking pair but the face of a gargoyle.
A fight started within five minutes of me being there, ending up with one of them bottling the other. I left after one. The disappointment still lives with me to this day.

Bermondsey pub late 70's an old school mate was sitting on the bar stools having a lunchtime pint with his dad when two men storm in with sawn offs, they grab his dad and kneecap him both knees (gambling debt) my old mate runs for the side exit door but they shoot him in the back before he makes it, he stumbles through the doors and crawls to the taxi cab office next door who take him to Hospital, he lost so much blood they said he would have been Hovis in minutes if the cab office wasn't next door. They both received death threats to finish them off after that and my mate decided to emigrate was just 19yrs, never saw or heard of him since.
